Poveglia island is situated in venetian lagoon, Northern Italy. The island was used as as a quarantine facility for those suffering from the plague during 1776 upto almost about a 100 years later after which it was also used as a mental hospital. The hospital was closed down in 1968 and the island has been vacant since then. The Italian state has tried to auction the island several times since 2014 but the island still remains vacant. It is estimated that a total of 160,000 people died on the island. The core of the island is literally made of human remains because of the bodies that were burnt to prevent the spread of plague. In 1922,when the mental hospital was built with an impressive bell tower, the patients immediately began to see ghosts of the plague victims. They would hear tortured wails and screams at night but their complaints were ignored as they were already considered insane.
One doctor decided to find a cure for insanity and started experimenting on patients secretly. Patients were taken to the bell tower and tortured by the doctor and his accomplices. After many years of performing this heinous act, the doctor started witnessing the spirits of the tortured and plague victims himself. He went mad and jumped off the bell tower. The witness on the scene reported that he did not die immediately but as soon as he fell a black mist formed around him and choked him. It is rumored that his spirit still haunts the bell tower and on many occasions people heard the sound of a bell ringing even from across the bay. However the bell was already removed a long time ago. A family decided to buy the island and build a holiday home there but they ran away on the first night they stayed on the island. The details of their encounters are not exactly known but it is rumored that their daughter’s face was ripped and required 14 stitches.

Psychics who visited the island were extremely frightened because of all the negative energy they witnessed there. It is illegal for anyone to visit the island, however a lot of thrill seekers still dodge the authorities and go there but everyone who has visited the island, refuse to go there again.
