Chase vault is located in Christ Church parish church in Oistins, Christchurch, Barbados. The place is best known for a mysterious legend of the moving coffins. According to the legend, each time the vault was opened, all the coffins would have changed their positions. The vault was a heavily sealed one and whoever had to go inside the vault had to remove a huge marble slab in order to get inside. The Chase family bought the vault in the 1800s, soon after 3 family members died in quick succession from one another. Thomas chase, the man of the family also committed suicide and was buried there. After that whenever the vault was opened for another burial or maintenance, the coffins despite being really heavy were found scattered around as if they were thrown away by someone from their original place. The family believed it to be the work of vandals, however no footprints or any other signs of break in were ever found. The coffins would then be moved to their original positions, but the same thing would happen every time the vault would be reopened. The legend spread all around the town like wildfire. People began talking about the reason for this mysterious activity. The most famous and widely believed explanation was that a curse has been put on the family using black magic.
